2023 Petit Verdot Levi Philander Davis Vineyard

We cultivate less than 500 Petit Verdot grapevines in a single acre adjacent to the Brothers Vineyard.  Its stated purpose is to complement our Cabernet Sauvignons, but we always try to bottle a barrel or two as a varietal – initially to explore terroir, but we've become enthralled by the dark, rich, spicy, aromatic wine the little vineyard produces.  It's named after Levi Philander Davis, who homesteaded the ranch in 1878.  As Diana blended the '23 Cabernets, she was only able to hold out a single barrel of Petit Verdot to bottle as a stand-alone.  What to serve alongside?  Thai chicken?  Whole grilled white fish with a Mango chutney?  Perhaps some shaved water chestnuts on top, lightly toasted in place?  29 cases bottled.

Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
Winter and spring rains replenished our reservoirs, restored the water table, and saturated the fields, setting the stage for a healthy growing season. The weather remained cool and even throughout the year, with flowering and harvest unfolding steadily and without pressure. The 2023 vintage enjoyed one of the longest growing seasons in recent memory, allowing for generous hang time and gradual ripening. The resulting wines are refined and poised—marked by depth of fruit, balanced acidity, and a quiet, weightless elegance.
Winemaker Notes
The 2023 Petit Verdot reveals the variety’s more gentle and refined side, with aromas of black plum and currant accented by gentle hints of vanilla and cinnamon. On the palate, the wine is smooth and generous, lifted by the vintage’s bright acidity. The finish is fresh and clean, leaving a lasting sense of warmth and balance -- and the urge for another sip.
